Laser Safety
Instructions and warning for proper assembly, maintenance, and safe use
To ensure safe and efficient operation of your ROV and/or Pipe Crawler, carefully follow the provided care instructions. Confirm that all components are securely attached and positioned correctly before use. Regular maintenance is essential to keep the laser scaler functioning properly—this includes cleaning the lenses, inspecting for damage on the camera heads, and ensuring no obstructions are present. Always handle the device with care—never point the laser scaler directly at eyes or reflective surfaces, and avoid prolonged exposure to skin. If performing maintenance/assembly on the laser scaler, always wear the appropriate protective eyewear designed for Class 3B lasers. Failure to follow these instructions may lead to potential injury or damage to the laser system.
Description of laser radiation patterns and emissions
The lasers present in your vehicle are Class 3B with the following properties:
Red laser:
Type of laser: continuous wave (emission >= 0.25 s)
Wavelength: 650 nm
Maximum power/energy output: 10 mW
Beam divergence: 1 mrad
Green laser:
Type of laser: continuous wave (emission >= 0.25 s)
Wavelength: 520 nm
Maximum power/energy output: 50 mW
Beam divergence: 1 mrad
Values for the maximum permissible exposure (MPE), nominal ocular hazard distance (NOHD) and extended nominal ocular hazard distance (ENOHD)
Red lasers:
The following values apply to incidental direct viewing of t (time) = 0.25 s.
Maximum permissible exposure (MPE): 2.55 mW/cm^2
Nominal ocular hazard distance (NOHD): 22.4 m
Extended NOHD: N/A
Green lasers:
The following values apply to incidental direct viewing of t (time) = 0.25 s.
Maximum permissible exposure (MPE): 2.55 mW/cm^2
Nominal ocular hazard distance (NOHD): 50 m
Extended NOHD: N/A
Information for selecting eye protection
For red laser scalers:
Wavelength: 650 nm
Optical density: OD 3 or higher
Visual light transmission (VLT): 35-50%
For green laser scalers:
Wavelength: 520 nm
Optical density: OD 4 or higher
Visual light transmission (VLT): 35-50%
Legible reproductions of all required product labels and hazard warnings
All laser equipped modules must include proper warning labels. These labels must not be removed even after service.
Warning labels will include the following information:
Laser Class
Maximum output
Emitted wavelengths
IEC standard warning labels
Indication of laser aperture locations
Lasers are included as standard in the Revolution, Pivot, Photon, DTG3 and Pipe Trekker PTZ Cameras. See images below for locations marked in red.

List controls, adjustments and procedures for operation and maintenance, including a warning
During normal operation of the vehicle:
Do not stand in front of the camera head while lasers are on.
Do not look directly into the lasers.
Do not point the laser at reflective surfaces.
During maintenance of the vehicle:
Only have lasers on if actively performing maintenance on the laser alignment. If replacing a laser module, only power on the laser(s) once it has been installed back into the camera head for laser alignment.
Do not stand in front of the camera head while lasers are on.
Proper eye protection should be worn.
Caution - Use of controls, adjustments, or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in serious injury due to laser beam radiation.
Statement of laser energy source compatibility requirements
The lasers installed in vehicles are controlled via firmware and are powered with 3.3V. Lasers SHOULD NOT be removed from the vehicle and powered on externally. Failure to follow this guideline may result in serious injury.
